Mastering Your Email Mailing List with David Riklan

You’ve heard you need an email list, but do you know why it even matters? David Riklan has a classic right-place-right-time story when it comes to content and email marketing. He started his career in sales and marketing and stumbled into the digital self-help industry just as it was taking off. Today, his website SelfGrowth.com has become a powerful community of hundreds of thousands of articles.

So what’s the best way to connect with your audience reading your content? David says it through email marketing.

Growth by Email Marketing

He started email marketing in the pioneer days, and he saw the same kind of growth. He created self-growth emails for his audience, and this built strong relationships. Now, he has two main pieces of advice for aspiring marketers. First, you should connect with people who can potentially help you. Second, you should connect with people in a way you have control over.

Email marketing puts you, as a business owner, in the driver’s seat. Though he still thinks social media is important, you need to use these platforms to drive people to opt-in to your email list.

Think about it this way: Facebook can kick you off at any time. You don’t own that platform. You can physically own your email mailing list. This is your real tool for connecting with your audience. You have ownership of this list completely, and nobody can take it from you.

Is Email Marketing Dying?

One of the biggest complaints David hears today is that email marketing is dying. While he agrees people today are opening fewer emails, that doesn’t make your list any less powerful.

For instance, you can upload your list to Facebook and target ads to those who’ve opted into your emails. You can invite them to connect on LinkedIn. “You can leverage your email list on everything you’re doing,” David says.

You can’t rely on social media. You can’t rely on your page ranking. These things rise and fall naturally over the course of your business. Your page list is there for the long haul. It’s not going anywhere. Once again, you’re in control.

If you want to see your business succeed, you need to build your list. These are people who have agreed to hear from you again and again! How cool is that? So take advantage of your list by giving it the attention it deserves.

Now that you know WHY you need email marketing, you need to know HOW to use email marketing. Listen to the rest of David Riklan’s interview on this episode to hear all his tips!
