For twenty-four years, Sue worked in radio in Vancouver. After her time on radio, she focused more on helping others as a business consultant. For the past seven years, Sue has been very busy helping other people build and grow their businesses using video and social media.

When she first heard about Tik Tok, Sue was not positive that the social media platform was going to be helpful for business due to the large population of teen-targeted content. Despite this, she decided to have fun experimenting with it and she quickly learned about the large number of viewers on Tik Tok who are 30 and above. Within six months Sue has managed to build a large following and make herself the expert by teaching Tik Tok to other adults. 

In this episode, Sue and Ian explore the business opportunities that Tik Tok can offer. She also teaches the tips, tricks, and winning formula that she has taught to her own students, resulting in a video garnering over a million views. 

 

How to Actually Grow a Business on Tik Tok

When asked if it is possible to grow a business on Tik Tok, Sue Zimmerman describes the surprisingly huge amount of opportunity there is for adults within the social media platform. Besides Tik Tok, there is no other platform where somebody can create an account, have zero followers, and get a million views on a video.

For Sue, Tik Tok was a fun test at first. As she became more comfortable with the app, she quickly learned her winning formula to help Tik Tok turn into a strategic business opportunity.  What is great about Tik Tok is how the app adjusts to the user’s needs and likes. The more you like and comment on specific types of videos, the more it will show you videos that are similar to those (versus the onslaught of teens dancing).

Sue explains that you want to use Tik Tok’s algorithm to your advantage by creating consistent content within a niche. For her, the answer was easy. As she was learning and experimenting with Tik Tok, she began to post her findings on the app, only to realize there was a whole group of adults who also wanted to become better at Tik Tok. While teaching herself, she could educate others and gain a following all in one fell swoop. From there, Sue mentions her Tik Tok for Business Facebook group – a highly active group of adults learning Tik Tok. By leading people away from Tik Tok, and into her other platforms, she can begin strategy stacking for her business.

 

 

The Tik Tok Content Strategy That Brings Results

It can be overwhelming to open up Tik Tok and start your first video. That is why Sue encourages everybody to just start without hesitation. The more you make yourself post, the more you will get a feel for what you want to create as well as the app itself. Her next piece of advice is to find that niche you want to create videos in and stick to it. She personally creates ten videos within her niche, and then two fun, random videos that do not relate.

Sue’s biggest piece of advice when it comes to content? You must keep it consistent. She highly recommends posting every single day on Tik Tok, sometimes even more. This may sound impossible, but do not forget that the average Tik Tok is about 15 seconds. Make your daily video short, sweet, and full of value to keep viewers coming back.

When asked how she decides on content creation, she answered that she keeps a note in her phone where she is constantly adding new ideas daily. Another way she creates content is through her following. After you have gained a big enough following, where your viewers are interacting with you in the comments, you most likely will have followers asking you questions that pertain to your niche. Sue gets multiple questions daily and uses these questions as topics for her Tik Toks. Her audience is essentially providing content for her at this point.
